National Geographic: One of the toughest part of being a park ranger is you're protecting the animals from armed poachers. Rangers in Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) face the added dangers of rebels who would engage in poaching to fund their civil war against the government. Armed with machine guns, rocket launchers, armed vehicles and mortars, these rebel poachers are many times more fierce than the typical poacher which often flee when spotted by a ranger. DRC is home to one quarter of the world's gorilla which are often hunted and shipped off to collectors. To date over 140 rangers have been killed in the line of work protecting the largest habitat of gorilla in the world.
